Researchers looked at the data and found that the statins reduced the risk of a small number of people going into heart failure, strokes and a number of other conditions, including type 2 diabetes and the risk of heart attacks.
“Statins are effective for preventing heart disease and stroke, but their use is associated with serious health risks,” says lead author Dr. Steven Nissen, director of the Division of Cardiovascular Disease, Cardiovascular Epidemiology at New York Heart Association (NYHA). “These are common side effects of statins, but the statin drugs have a risk of serious heart problems and stroke.”
The new study was led by Dr. Elizabeth A. Johnson, MD, of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and colleagues.
“The findings indicate that even the statins’ use may be associated with serious health problems,” says Nissen. “These results are important to consider in the early stages of clinical trials.”
